Arabian Nights

The main theme throughout the play is the concept of translation errors and cultural differences. The one thing emphasized is the normalness of the characters of Flora and Norman while contrasting it with the ‘exoticness’ of the translator and the setting of the play. This was done through the use of a relatively simple background to set the scene, contrasted with a few added details into the set, which added color and a more localized feel to the set.

This is a design collage for Le Moyne College’s 2008 production of Arabian Nights by David Ives, directed by Michael Barbour.  One of these images was used as a projection in the set design.  The images chosen reflect a realistic setting, which contrasts with the absurdity of the characters.  Most of the images are very crowded, which gives a cluttered, close feeling without physically crowding the stage.
